Entering the 21st Century, China has proven to be emerging as the next super power. Fine China set off to examine the various issues as a project started in 1997. The first edition was simply a print of re-designed porcelain ware with reference to the history and culture. The second edition (2014) became a book project, with written text that describes each objects, in the form of a pseudo-art catalogue. The third edition (2021) is another revision, with four new pieces that speaks about the more recent events and political issues related to China.

This current set of photo prints is another revision, created in 2025. It consists of 25 images. Exhibited at Paul Petro Contemporary Art.

Fine China

Blueprint, 30 x 42 inches

1998

Fine China is made with the now obsolete architectural blue print technology. It is an exploration of China's past and present with a different take on issues within and outside a country of growing influence in the present day, with a collection of 24 re-designed porcelains ( fine china ) with banal and ironic images. It is a search for China's identity in the new millennium.

With the support of Pleasure Dome (Toronto) for a project titled Blueprint: A Blueprint for Moving Images in the 21st Century, it was  re-invented as a video piece.

In 2014, Tam revisited the print and included a description for each porcelain objects and reprinted the work in a book form (Hotam #4).
